If you had told me at the beginning of my career that managing my manager was part of what I needed to do to be successful, I would have replied "that's ridiculous - it's my manager's job to manage me!" Well, experience has taught me that understanding & aligning yourself to your boss' objectives can make or break a career, regardless of how talented you are.
At all stages of our careers, it's important to step back & think strategically about how you align what you're trying to do with what your boss is trying do. This is how you'll get the boss' attention and support for pushing ahead on goals that are important to you. Relying just on the boss, however, has its risks too. Right from the get-go in any new role, it's critical to be clear on who your other key stakeholders are (formal & informal) & what's important to them, as your boss may be promoted (or worse!) leaving you without the support you need.
